A working knowledge of your aerobic septic system pays for itself. Skim the sections below or jump straight to what you need.
An aerobic septic system is an on-site sewage facility (OSSF) that uses oxygen to break down wastewater before it's disinfected and dispersed via a spray field. Unlike a conventional gravity septic tank with a drain field, an aerobic system actively treats the water — which produces cleaner effluent and works on lots where a traditional system can't.
In Texas, aerobic systems are common because of clay-heavy soil and high water tables. They require ongoing maintenance by a licensed operator to stay in compliance with TCEQ regulations.
| 01 | Trash Tank Raw wastewater enters and heavy solids settle out before treatment begins. |
| 02 | Aeration Chamber Air pump injects oxygen. Aerobic bacteria consume organic waste. |
| 03 | Clarification Solids settle out again; clarified effluent moves toward disinfection. |
| 04 | Sludge Return Settled solids are returned upstream for further breakdown. |
| 05 | Disinfection Chlorine tablets (or liquid) treat the effluent to legal discharge quality. |
| 06 | Pump Tank & Controls Effluent stored, then pumped through spray heads across the field. |
First: don't panic. Most alarms have a simple cause. Here's what to do:
Most residential systems consume tablets every 2–3 months, depending on household size and water usage. Check the tube every month — visual inspection is the best gauge.
